The Sirdal Book 132 pages 24 x 30 cm hardcover
The book depicts a year’s journey through the varied and entrancing landscape of the Sirdal valley. Join the discovery trail, from the sources of the Sira river in Njadarheim and Rjuven, where the most southerly of Europe’s reindeer herds have their main habitation. For countless ages this area has provided men and animals with food, from the Stone Age, when hunters made their way inland from the coastal areas, to modern times when the local inhabitants still supplement their diet from Nature’s bounty. Sira is the river from which the valley takes its name, not surprisingly since after all it was the river that carved out the valley. Throughout the many ice ages, it dug and scoured ever deeper until the valley took its present form. As it approaches the lake of Sirdalsvatnet, the flowing waters seem to pause a while and almost stand still. Here we find a more gentle southern landscape, with fruit orchards and brightly varnished boats. But on the whole, Sirdalsvatnet looks more like a long, steep-sided, west Norway fjord, with little farms clinging to the mountain sides. The only thing missing is the big tourist boats. But people find their way here all the same, with adventures a-plenty in wait whether it be dog-sledging over the plateaux or absailing to the heart of the Dorgefossen waterfall. Sirdal is a good place to be, both to live in and to visit.
